Jakarta’s deadly weekend floods have subsided: official

0 2

Jakarta is relatively flood-free as of Monday morning, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said, after intense rain over the weekend flushed many parts of the city and killed at least five people.

According to the agency, floods throughout the capital temporarily displaced 3,311 people from their homes on Saturday, followed by 1,332 people on Sunday. Five people — four children who drowned in the flood and one elderly male who was locked inside his house — were killed in the floods.

Floods have all but subsided in the handful of neighborhoods that were still flooded as of Sunday evening.

“[The flood in those remaining neighborhoods] have all subsided since last night,” BPBD Jakarta acting chief Sabdo Kurnianto said this morning.

The flooding over the weekend was the deadliest in Jakarta since the New Year’s Eve 2020 floods, which killed 67 people in the capital. The latest flooding was the result of intense and frequent rainfall throughout Saturday and early on Sunday, which was predicted to be the heaviest since NYE 2020.

Some of the worst affected areas included South Jakarta’s Kemang and East Jakarta’s Cipinang.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned of more heavy rain up until at least Wednesday in the capital, which may trigger more floods and landslides.
