President Jokowi hopeful of ‘a better world’ as he congratulates US President Joe Biden

President Joko Widodo joined the chorus of world leaders congratulating newly elected US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, with the Indonesian leader saying that he’s hopeful of continued cooperation between the two nations.

Jokowi welcomed Biden to the presidential club on social media this morning, in which the former posted a photo from the pair’s meeting in Washington DC in October 2015. The Democrat was vice president to President Barack Obama at the time, while Jokowi was one year into his first presidential term.

“Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris on your inauguration as the 46th President and 49th Vice President of the United States,” Jokowi wrote in the caption.

“Let us continue to strengthen our strategic partnership, not only for the benefit of our two nations, but for a better world for all.”

The US has had three presidents, namely Obama, Donald Trump, and now Biden, ever since Jokowi took the top office of the world’s fourth most populous nation in 2014. On the surface, Jokowi’s government remained on good terms with the US regardless of who was in power.

And that even applied to Trump, whose administration was, by and large, friendly with the Indonesian government. While many in the world’s most populous Muslim nation revile his bigotry, Trump has some friends in high places in Indonesia, chief among whom is his business partner Hary Tanoe, a media mogul/politician and an ally of Jokowi.
